Procera Networks Blocks Security Threats From Instant Messenger and P2P Programs

Prevents Hackers From Using Instant Messenger Programs to Launch Denial of Service Attacks

CAMPBELL, Calif., Oct 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Procera(r) Networks, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: PRNW - News), a pioneering developer of optimized network security and compliance systems, announced today that its OptimIP intelligent network appliance "rogue warrior" configuration can block and control instant messenger sessions, P2P traffic and Webmail to eliminate security threats and abuse of network resources resulting from uncontrolled use of these applications.

Small and mid-sized businesses, enterprise departments and branch offices using Procera's OptimIP intelligent network appliance can now block and control employees' use of "rogue" applications such as AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger; P2P programs such as Kazaa; and Webmail programs such as Microsoft Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail.

"Our 'rogue warrior' configuration addresses our customers' increasing concerns that their employees' use of internal networks may be leading to unwarranted security exposure and risk of legal liability," said Dr. Anil K. Sahai, Executive Vice President and CTO of Procera Networks. "For example, hackers can now use instant messenger programs to control a computer remotely using Nmapbot, a new type of 'chatterbot' that can allow a hacker to scan a remote network for machines that can be controlled to launch a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Further, employees' use of P2P and Webmail programs can open the door to corporate liability if used to exchange copyrighted content, such as music and videos, exchange sensitive corporate information or unauthorized content, such as pornography."

When an OptimIP appliance equipped as a "rogue warrior" is configured via its Web-based policy configuration GUI to block or control unauthorized and low-priority traffic, use of IM, P2P programs and Webmail can be completely blocked to eliminate internal network security, or rate limited in increments as granular as 64Kbits to ensure that this traffic has little impact on internal network performance. In fact, Procera recommends that P2P programs such as Kazaa be throttled instead of blocked to reduce the likelihood that the P2P program will "morph" to use an unrestricted port. Procera's OptimIP appliance uses the company's wire-speed IP-Return(TM) policy engine to block or control unauthorized and low-priority traffic without introducing network latency.

"Unfortunately, conventional firewalls are typically unable to detect or control 'rogue' traffic from instant messenger, P2P programs or Webmail, because they provide only port based traffic control," said Gary J. Johnson, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Procera Networks. "It's no wonder that customers are telling us they need to deploy firewall-like capabilities with the wire-speed intelligence required to protect and control their internal business networks. The beauty of the Procera solution is that it works without requiring any modifications or upgrades to existing networking infrastructures."

In conjunction with the company's previously announced Secure Archiving Initiative, Procera Networks will also deliver a capability for its OptimIP appliance system that can block, control and archive instant messenger, corporate Email and Webmail communications -- using a single hardware appliance working at wire-speed performance which can be easily deployed side by side with any standard networking gear from other vendors in the existing network. This will enable enterprises to meet stringent data storage requirements, including regulations mandated by U.S.-SEC Rule 17a-4 at a much lower cost of operation when compared to other server or desktop based software based solutions for data archiving.

Pricing and Availability

Procera's OptimIP intelligent network appliances equipped with the "rogue warrior" configuration are priced starting at $3,495 and are available immediately in 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet configurations.
